Map London in Type Workshop

Today we had another very interesting workshop with Jo Spencer. Actually I think that this was the best workshop that I have attended for this project so far. As maps are a very important part of graphic communication; we were asked to reproduce the map of London with type. The map of London was divided into 24 A5 sections and each of us created an A5 map of 1 area of london using type. Here is what we did....

So I got section 15 of the map

This is how my section looked like.

Jo putting all the maps together....

This is the map that our group made.

On the 26th of April, we went to visit A Practice for Everyday Life studio in East London. APFEL is a graphic design studio founded by Kirsty Carter and Emma Thomas in 2003. It was a very good experience to get a feel of how a design studio works, how it looks likeand what its like to work in the graphic design industry.

PICK ME UP, Graphic Art Fair

On Monday the 26th of April, we went to the Pick Me Up Graphic arts fair at Somerset House. It was a really good experience as we got to see what's going on in the industry at the moment and there was a lot to take inspiration from. There was a lot of work in the fair that I liked, and took so many photos, that I can't decide which ones to put on the blog and which ones to leave. Well I guess I will just choose my very favourite ones and leave the rest, here are a few photos from the fair....
The entrance....
This was the very first bit of the fair, the above work is by James Joyce, a British designer who lives and works in London. Among the work of all the other designers, I liked his work the best. I really liked the use of solid shapes and bright colours, his work really stood out amongst others, and I absolutely love its simplicity. there is some more great stuff on his website http://www.one-fine-day.co.uk/
HelloVon, a studio established in 2006 by London based illustrator and artist Von. I really like the two pieces of text by the artist, the first one says OPEN, and the other one says All is Full of Love. If you see them from close, you can't figure out that it's text, but when you go further then it all starts making sense. http://www.hellovon.com/
Mathis Rekowski, a German artist who live and works in Berlin. http://mathisrekowski.com/
Siggi Eggertson, an Icelandic designer who lives and works in Berlin http://www.vanillusaft.com/
I absolutely loved this collage by Lorenzo Petrantoni, an Italian artist who lives
Erin Petson, a British artist who lives and works in London http://www.erinpetson.com/
Work by Peepshow, a multi-disciplinary collective specialising in illustration, animation and art direction. Peepshow has been based in East London since last 10 years, producing a variety of commercial work at national and international level.

Rob Ryan's studio at the Pick Me Up fair. Rob Ryan and his team relocated their East London studio to the Pick Me Up for the duration of the fair, allowing a unique insight into their intricate working practice. Visit Rob Ryan's website at http://www.misterrob.co.uk/

Here are a few photos from the fair...

Rob Ryan's height chart, As Each Year Went By. I found this chart very interesting, the text on it was fun to read, the story starts from the bottom of the chart, it reads 'ONE DAY I DISCOVERED HOW THRILLING IT COULD BE TO WALK AROUND SLOWLY AND TAKE MY TIME. LOOKING AT THE THINGS IN MY TOWN AS THEY PASS BY. SAVOURING THEM, ENJOYING THEM. UNTIL UNTIL I RAN SO FAST AND TALKED AND ATE AND DRANK 7UP AND EACH DAY I GOT ONE MORE DAY OLDER AND HAIRIER AND CLEVERER AND SILLIER' I loved the way how each work by Rob Ryan had such a personal feel to it and the messages on all of them are so genuine that they could relate to anyone. I had never seen his work before but I really really adore it, I think it's simply beautiful.

Stencils and Metamorphosis

Today we had another very interesting workshop with Rachel Ortas, the aim of the workshop was to use the letters spelling London and transform them into characters, that somehow capture our feelings or ideas about London. Here are a few photos from the workshop.

So I started off with making a stencil for the word London
So, after doing an experiment print with the stencil, I made another stencil, using the same letters but adding a few images that represent London, like the bus, as London is very famous for it's transportation, the London Eye, and the Big Ben.
I am quite happy with what I achieved from the workshop, but i will take it forward and try to actually make characters out of the letter, and will be posting them soon.
