Map London in Type Extension

These are the step by step images of the map of London that I made for the map London in type workshop extension. Instead of mapping whole London I chose just Central London for my map.

So this is the finished map, the tiny type in blue is all the information about the areas in the map.

Patterns...

A few patters by different designers......

Pattern London Workshop

Today we had a pattern workshop with Jo. The workshop was very interesting. We were asked to design and make a pattern to use in our research book based on the theme Graphic London. We could either take a shape or image directly from the surroundings and make it into a graphic pattern or take a found object and make it into an interesting unique image using the technique of pattern making.
So I went out and took a few photos and collected maps and leaflets from the tube station. So when i cam back to the workshop and looked at all photos and collected material, I found the roundels for Transport for London quite interesting, as they come in four different combinations, one for general Transport for London, and others for London Buses, rivr and underground. So I combined them all together and tried to make a pattern with them. Here are a few images.

Moving London Workshop

On Tuesday we had a workshop with David, the workshop was about Moving London, the everyday conversations of people we hear while travelling around London. The workshop focused on using found conversation as a starting point to produce a piece of kinetic typography using flash or stop motion animation. I had been working of recording the conversations of different people on my iphone for a week, it was a bit challenging, but at the same time it was quite fun listening to what other people are talking about.
There is also this very interesting website in which there is a lot of interesting tube gossip http://www.themanwhofellasleep.com/gossip.html

In the beginning of the lesson we were given a bit of an introduction about using Flash and iStop motion. After the introduction we decided to make our piece of Kinetic tpography using stop motion animation. Below ate the photos of how we went about making the animation.

So we chose a phrase from the tube gossip website, relating to transportation, and decide to make an animation out of newspaper cuttings.

These are the two animations that we mde in the wokrshop.

Statistic Shapes Workshop continued.......

After having the presentation and getting an idea of what we were supposed to do, we were given a sheet with five questions, from which we had to choose one and collect data related to it and then present it in an interesting, 3D and graphical way. The task that me and Nadia chose to measure data for was 'How many stairs are there from tube station to the FdA studio'. So we headed back to the tube station and started our journey to the FdA studio, below are step by step photos of all the stairs that came on the way.

Exit 12 of Elephant & Castle Subway, had 18 stairs

Going up the Exit 10, which had 22 stairs

Then the first flight of stairs when you enter the college which also had 22 stairs

The first flight of stairs towards the FdA studios had 20 stairs

The second one had 20 as well, and in total there were 102 stairs, I had never imagined of counting the number of stairs on my way to college, but it was good to know :)

So after collecting all the data, we then came back to the studio, and worked on how we are going to present our data. So we started off by making rough mock ups of the possible ways of presenting the information. Below are the photos of the process....

First we thought we could make a number of rectangular cuboids like above and stack them all up.
Then we thought that may be we can make the stairs like this, but then we thought that the first idea is better, so we will go with that one.
So basically we are going to make 5 of these cuboids, and stack them up in a sequence, like the stairs that came first will be at the bottom and so on. We also thought of colour coding the stairs in the college and the ones outside, so we chose two shades of green for the subway stairs and red, orange and yellow respectively for the college ones. Below are the photos of how we made it.
The final 'Statistic Shape' that we made from our collected data.
I think it looks quite good with the actual stairs. The workshop was quite fun as all the Jo's workshops are, I will be taking this project further and improving the statistic shape that we made today, as I think that it needs to be a bit more stiff for that it can stand, and also it can have a bit of text on it. Will be posting the improved one soon.
